Orland Road Flag, Frederick, MD.

Liberty Flag, Frederick, MD.

“Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thru the perilous fight… Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.”

Well today I got to eat my words.  I normally tell my students, “If you don’t have your camera, you won’t be able to take pictures.”  So here we are going to a friends house, it’s blistering cold outside, wind howling and we turn unto Orland Road in rural Frederick County. There blowing in the wind was the stars and stripes, in it’s “perilous fight” against the elements.  My first thought – “I don’t have my camera!”

From the back seat  Jeff (Truesdale) exclaimed, ” I have my camera. I thought that if I was coming with you, the photographer, I should bring my since most likely you’d be taking pictures and teaching me!”  Well it was almost unbearable.  I had already taken a beautiful still-life image at home for the daily picture project, so my picture for the day had been fulfilled. WRONG.

As a photographer, taking pictures is never over. My assignment was (sort of), but taking pictures was not, never is.  If you don’t have a camera, the missed image will float in your mind for days.  And you will say to yourself, “Never again.”  But unless you make it a habit to bring your camera, it will happen… again and again.

So , I made a quick U-Turn, I had to take a picture.  I have taken many pictures of this flag since someone put it up on July 4th.  I had labeled in my mind, “The Liberty Flag.”  So my first thought was to borrow Jeff’s camera, and shoot the picture.  But then I remembered the second part of my implore to my students, “If you forget your camera and you see a picture, use your cell phone!”

Well this is the first published image from my 2 MegaPixel / LG Phone.  The still-life, well it will be there for another day.
